WeScreenplay just launched another career.
After winning the 2017 Diverse Voices Grand Prize, Amanda Bermudez was connected by the WeScreenplay team to a literary manager at Gotham Group, who represents high-profile clients like Steve Buscemi and Freida Pinto. She went on to sign with Gotham and is working on both features and television.
A little about her winning script The Face of the Earth: In a perilous reversal of image and anonymity, a Japanese-American model enters Witness Protection after exposing a sex trafficking ring, but her idyllic new life – and nascent romance with an erudite barmaid – are threatened by a brutal ex-flame and her own mortal obsession with the public eye.
She says, “Writing is often considered to be a deeply solitary enterprise, but the most successful writers in the industry tend to value the resources of collaboration, community, and authentic expertise. The Diverse Voices Award has offered these resources in spades. From insightful creative guidance to extensive practical support, my experience with this competition and the opportunities it provides has been a remarkable asset to my career.”
Amanda joins the list of WeScreenplay contest winners that have been signed, and she definitely won’t be the last. Congratulations to Amanda and her screenwriting hustle.
Diverse Voices strives to provide a contest that is purely focused on promoting and encouraging diverse voices in Hollywood. The contest encourages stories that are told from perspectives that are often underrepresented in Hollywood today — according to the WGA diversity report that is writers of color, women writers, and writers over the age of 40. We’d also love to see stories from the perspective of writers with disabilities, writers in the LGBTQ+ community, and any other voice that is currently underrepresented in Hollywood today.
